What Makes a Radio "Intrinsically Safe"?

Intrinsic safety (IS) is a protection technique applied to electrical equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres. An IS-rated device is designed so that the electrical and thermal energy within it is always too low to cause ignition of a hazardous atmosphere — even under fault conditions.

This is fundamentally different from explosion-proof (XP) equipment, which contains an explosion rather than preventing it. IS equipment prevents ignition entirely — making it the preferred standard for portable communication devices.
